In conversation with Emmy

NNorwegian pop star Emmy is no stranger to Eurovision. Her first experience of a similar format came in 2015, when she took part in the Melodi Grand Prix Junior at just 14 years old. Back in 2021, she fared well in the Melodi Grand Prix but did not make it to Eurovision. After building a following on TikTok, she found herself in the running for Ireland in the Eurosong 2025. She found herself victorious and is now preparing to represent one of the most successful countries in Eurovision history. We caught up with her to learn more.

Hi, first and foremost, how are you?

Hi! I’m super excited and thankful for being on this adventure.

What an exciting 2025 so far... You must be thrilled with how it's playing out. What's been the highlight?

So, so exciting, yes! The highlight must have been when we got to know that we were part of Eurovision.

We absolutely love Laika Party. Tell us a little about the process behind the scenes in creating the song.

Thank you so much. I thought the dog Laika’s story was so sad that I wanted to create a song and scenario where she lives on, is happy and is having her party in the sky! I brought this idea to a songwriting camp, and the group liked it and wanted to make this song with me. At that camp, there was an Irish songwriter as well, and that’s how the song was sent to the beautiful Ireland!

Did you always intend the song for Eurovision?

When I see, hear about or experience something sad, I really like to write songs about it to put my emotions and thoughts into words and potentially write alternative and happier scenarios! So initially, the idea of the song wasn’t intended for Eurovision, but then I was going to this Eurovision songwriting camp, and since the group liked the idea, we decided to make that song.

Have you always been a big fan of Eurovision?

Yes, I’ve been a fan since I was a little girl. It has just been this thing I’ve looked forward to every year. A celebration of music! My brother and I actually had this childhood dream of going there together, and we never ever thought it would come true, so this feels so unreal – and we are so incredibly grateful and excited.

Who is your favourite Eurovision entry of all time?

I love Run Away from Moldova!

Ireland has had a very strong history at Eurovision. Do you have a favourite Irish performance?

I love Lipstick by Jedward!! Such an iconic song and performance by such iconic twins! It’s one of the first Eurovision performances I remember properly as well, so I have good memories connected to it!

If you had to file it between two other songs, what would they be and why...?

I don’t know, but I would say the song could remind one of the style of pop/dance songs from the 90s and early 2000s!

Who do you feel is your stiffest competition?

I feel like everyone is going to be hard competition, and there are so many super cool and beautiful songs.

What can we expect from your Basel performance?

Space and silver are some key words!

What is your Eurovision ambition?

My Eurovision ambition and hope is to do the best I can and try to make Ireland proud!

If you could record with one other Eurovision artist, who would you work with?

I’d love to record a high-note song with JJ from Austria!

And lastly, aside from Eurovision, what other 2025 plans do you have?

We got a kitten not long ago, so my plans aside from Eurovision are being with my family and kitten and releasing more songs, and I also have some performances planned!
