From 28th to the 30th November, Theatre@41 in York city centre will host a brand-new production of Alice in Wonderland, performed by local repertory company Pop Yer Clogs Theatre, who are returning to Theatre@41 after their successful production of The Importance of Being Earnest, earlier this year. This new adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s timeless classic, will bring wonderland’s colourful characters right to the heart of York, with hand made puppets, costumes, and set, along with wonderland’s trademark absurdity. The production is produced, directed, and performed by local company Pop Yer Clogs Theatre, who are excited to bring such a popular story with both children and adults to the boards of Theatre@41.

First published in 1865, Alice in Wonderland is a children’s novel which is an example of the literary nonsense genre. The story contains many memorable lines such as, “We’re all mad here,” and “Off with their heads!”

The play follows young Alice on her adventures underground, as she navigates her way through an imperfect and unfamiliar world. Discovering a place where absurdity is the norm, logic is turned on its head and animals can talk. On her journey she encounters many weird, wonderful and colourful characters, including the Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat and of course – the Mad Hatter! It is a tale full of fantasy, imagination and fun, where every time is “tea-time” and nothing is ever really as it seems.

Erin Keogh, who plays Alice, says: “It’s a pleasure to be performing at Theatre@41 again, with such a fantastic show full of weird, wonderful characters and lots of imagery. This really is a show for everyone and a story that I’m sure everyone is familiar with. Playing Alice has been super fun! She’s so inquisitive and ‘curious’, and I really hope that everyone gets to feel what it’s like to be in Alice’s shoes as the audience are transported into a new, whimsical world.”

Rob Cotterill, who plays several characters (including the Mad Hatter), says:
“The Absurdity of Lewis Carroll’s world of Wonderland never ceases to amaze me, and I could not ask for a better cast to be exploring it with. The sheer level of imagination put into these characters is staggering, so having the opportunity to bring these characters to life at Theatre@41 is a real pleasure.”

Pop Yer Clogs Theatre have had a busy year of it, having produced both Earnest, and Alice, as well as other smaller projects including a recent one-off Murder Mystery event for the Thackray Museum of Medicine. They will return to Theatre@41 with a brand-new production in June 2025.

Alice in Wonderland will run from Thursday 28th to Saturday 30th November at 7:30 pm each evening, plus a Saturday afternoon matinee at 2:30pm. Tickets and further information can be found at https://tickets.41monkgate.co.uk/seasons/bde910de-a1fe-46d7-9df1-fac908603fd0.
