Singles Of The Week: 27 March 2020

As more and more communities around the world enter lockdown, the 'insta-concert' has been one of the forms of entertainment bringing joy into homes. While they may not be able to compete with the always appealing Joe Wicks doing his P.E. work outs, we believe that music is a healer. With many artists pushing ahead with releases, we decided to take a look at a few of the singles you can stream this week...

SINGLE OF THE WEEK: Sara Correia - Chegou Tão Tarde Rating: 5/5

Sara Correia is one of the growing Fado talents. Having impressed with her contemporary twist on the genre throughout her eponymous debut album, Chegou Tão Tarde builds on the solid foundation with a stunning and more traditional take on the genre. With her striking vocal centre stage, Chegou Tão Tarde is beautifully crafted and emotionally charged.

Bright Light Bright Light ft. Initial Talk, Niki Haris & Donna De Lory - This Was My House Rating: 4/5

Bright Light Bright Light has been one of the most flawless 90s revivalists to have leaped into prominence in the last decade. Four years since his last studio album and two years since his last EP, This Was My House is a stunning return that will have you dancing your little heart out. We suggest opening up a Bright Light Bright Light playlist, heading to whichever chat platform you prefer and inviting all your friends to one euphoric isolation party.

Kat Eaton - Checking In Rating: 4/5

Kat Eaton is one of Sheffield's finest exports. Boasting a rich, soulful vocal, it is little surprise that she caught Jools Holland's attention. Having joined the impressario on tour, she has steadily been building her fanbase on home turf - while also finding a firm place in the heart of the Dutch public. Checking In is a poignant mid-tempo number that will give you tingles as you follow its narrative.

Tally Spear - Can't Find What I'm Looking For Rating: 3.5/5

Tally Spear has come a very long way from the country-folkster who debuted with her self-penned ditties just a few years ago. Can't Find What I'm Looking For is a very direct, credi-pop track that sees her aligning more closely with ALMA and Declan McKenna. It has so much potential and there is definitely the breakthrough single up her sleeve. This is great playlist filler to shake your hair to, but it isn't the one she will be remember for.

Dua Lipa - Break My Heart Rating: 5/5

A very close contendor for the single of the week, Break My Heart is the finest single Dua Lipa has released since IDGAF. This is the stay at home anthem we all need in our life. Open the windows, blast it loud and sing along with the teenagers relaxing in their garden next door. In fact, why not just head into your garden and have a suitably fence-divided street party with neighbours of all generations.

Sparks - One For The Ages Rating: 3.5/5

53 years since they first formed Sparks, brothers Ron and Russell Mael are still innovative music makers. One For The Ages is lifted from their forthcoming 24th studio album, A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip and is old-school Sparks with poignant lyrics and their magical musical touch.

Max Giesinger ft. Mo Trip - Nie Besser Als Jetzt Rating: 4/5

Ever since he appeared on The Voice in Germany, Max Giesinger's career trajectory has been enviable. While many musos deride his anthemic sound as generic, the appeal of his slightly gruff vocal is undeniable and his emotive delivery is compelling. Nie Besser Als Jetzt sees him change direction slightly. A move into recent The Script territory, it is a live for the moment anthem that could not have been better timed for release.

The Rising - Just Another Name Rating: 5/5

Irish duo The Rising are not just extremely talented, but they are also one of the hardest working acts we have ever met. Throw into the mix their humbleness and approachability and you have to wonder why they aren't filling stadiums already. Just Another Name is their strongest single to date. A radio ready slice of sing along country tinged rock pop. Chantelle McAteer's vocals are perfectly delivered. This should dominate radio waves around the world. Listen up radio producers!
