Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 19th April

Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week.

From Friday 19th April

Abigail (15)
Home invasion with a toothy twist. From Dead Silence (Scream 2022, Ready Or Not) comes this wicked horror that is a devilish update of an old Universal Pictures classic. The film sees a group of would be criminals infiltrate the wealthy mansion home of an underworld figure, taking his ballet dancing young daughter hostage for ransom. But a terrible deadly secret rides in this home, and when the tables are turned on this group, they enter a deadly game of survival. Turning expectations on their head in the bloodiest way imaginable, Abigail is a horror-ific spin on a classic Universal monster tale. Co- starring Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Alisha Weir and Giancarlo Esposito.

Swede Caroline (15)
Behold a future British cult classic is growing. Filmed as though it is a documentary, this hilarious British comedy follows the cutthroat world of competitive vegetable growing! As a scandal rocks this world, when up-and-comer Caroline has her prized Marrow’s stolen. Thus setting in motion a chain of events that heads straight to the top! Side-splittingly funny, and jam-packed with a cream of the (cabbage) crop of British talent, that includes Jo Hartley, Aisling Bea, Richard Lumsden, Ray Fearon, Alice Lowe and Faye Ripley! This is one prized grow, you’ll want to get to know.

Jeanne Du Barry (15)
Directed by and starring Maiwenn, this lavish French historical drama about the titular impoverished young woman who rises the ranks to become the mistress of King Louis XV is one of the most talked about dramas in years. Starring Johnny Depp as King Louis XV, his first time acting entirely in French, this romantically tinged drama has gone down a storm in France and drawn a fair degree of praise for its construction. With many calling it a grand historical spectacle and a well crafted costume drama production, with satirical edge.
