NE Theatre York follow this month’s production of
The Sound of Music with another stage musical classic - Rodgers and Hammerstein’s
Carousel.
A fully-staged concert version with an 18-piece orchestra is being staged at Tempest Anderson Hall in Museum Gardens, York, from 5 to 7 June
Rodgers and Hammerstein followed the success of
Oklahoma! with
Carousel, which premiered on Broadway in April 1945. After the famous opening
Carousel Waltz, the songs include the iconic
You’ll Never Walk Alone, June Is Bustin’ Out All Over, If I Loved You and
When I Marry Mr Snow.
Director Steve Tearle says: “This will be a fully staged concert version. The score will be given its full glory with an 18-piece orchestra led by Joe Allen. You get every word said so you can follow the story between the songs. Projections will transport the audience to Middle America to capture every moment of the story.”
The story revolves around carousel barker Billy Bigelow (played by Kit Stroud in the NET production) whose romance with mill worker Julie Jordan (Rebecca Jackson) comes at the price of both their jobs.
Julie’s best friend Carrie Pepperidge (Maia Beatrice) has her eyes on Mr Snow (Finlay Butler) which leads to a marriage proposal.
The story turns dark after Billy participates in a robbery to provide for Julie and their unborn child. After the robbery goes wrong Julie turns to her Aunt Netty (Perri Anne Barley) for comfort.
The composers are said to have regarded
Carousel as their personal favourite among their work. In 1999 Time magazine named
Carousel as the best musical of the 20th century.
