Musical Memories: Tom Aspaul

Tom Aspaul has written for artists including Kylie Minogue, Celeste and AlunaGeorge, but it is with his own releases that he has steadily built his reputation as one of the pop world's finest purveyors. Having toured with Louise and Saara Aalto before Covid-19 saw a series of live shows cancelled, his audience are buzzing after the arrival of the brilliant Black Country Disco. While we bopped to W.M and Tender, we caught up with Tom to learn what songs make him....

(NOTE FROM TOM: I'm gonna make it even more fun and only do ABBA songs, because, why not?)

Smile

Dancing Queen

Really obvious choice, but how can you not?

Contemplate

Should I Laugh Or Cry

A song about contemplation from their last album. Always makes me do the same.

Cry

When All Is Said And Done

Another from their last album. The lyrics, about a relationship ending, where no one is really to blame - I really relate to.

Laugh

Take A Chance On Me

Every time I hear this song, I think of the video, which always makes me giggle.

Want to work out

Voulez Vouz

A banger with a good BPM always gets me going!

Reminisce

If It Wasn't For The Nights

Always takes me back to a certain time and place.

Relax

Like An Angel Passing Through My Room

Frida's voice is so soothing in this one. Really gorgeous.

Feel Determined

Dancing Queen

Again, but why not. Something about the 'you can dance' bit makes me feel like I can do anything.

Dance

Lay All Your Love On Me

Just such a good song all around - but that beat and bassline are perfect for dancing.

Black Country Disco is out now.
