Kara Marni - Pushes The Button On Tour

Opening up for Sugababes on their current tour in Manchester, Kara Marni impressed with a set that had influences from pop to soul.

Describing her music as “soul with sprinkles of pop” the Brit School graduate's performance at the Apollo theatre included touches of Garage and R&B.

Rather than employing a team of dancers to appear with her on stage the spotlight was most certainly on Marni as she breezed through a set that demonstrated we will be hearing a lot more from this emerging singer in the future.

All Night was a track that would sound even more impressive if you heard it coming out of a huge sound system in a club in Ibiza, whilst Twisted Fantasy could have come off the latest Disclosure album with a song that had undercurrents of deep House music.

Strapping on her new Fender guitar the young singer asked the audience which cover version they would like to hear her perform: the Coldplay hit Fix You or the Gnarls Barkley classic, Crazy. With the latter being the choice of the Manchester audience the song was stripped down to a bare acoustic version as the young performer gave it a more delicate treatment.

The Beyoncé references became a little too much on Trippin where Marni appeared to be trying to emulate Crazy In Love , she would have been far better concentrating on her own strengths like her soulful voice and stage presence.

An impressive performance, nevertheless.
