HSAP Are The Champions With Energetic We Will Rock You

Ellie Morrow, Owen Wardle and Dan Stanford lead a hugely talented cast in a high-energy production that had the audience on its feet by the finale.

We Will Rock You is a musical packed with energy featuring the iconic songs of Queen. It is set in a futuristic world where music and individuality are banned, and it follows Galileo, Scaramouche and a group of rebels who fight to bring back rock music and freedom. With a live band on the stage, a visually striking set, vibrant and imaginative costumes and an excited audience, the show was destined for success.

Harrogate St Andrew’s Players version of We Will Rock You certainly did not disappoint. Louise Denison (Director/Choreographer) and Jim Lunt (Musical Director) led a hugely talented cast, showcasing some incredible local talent.

The opening scene featuring the Ga-Ga Girls, all identical in appearance, was fantastic. Their performance of Radio Ga Ga was accompanied by superb choreography and straight away set an exciting tone for the show. The leading actors led the production brilliantly with Ellie Morrow delivering a standout performance as Scaramouche; her voice was stunning and effortless. Morrow’s duet with Owen Wardle (Galileo) of Under Pressure, was a particular highlight, showcasing the pair’s impressive vocals and on-stage chemistry. Another standout performance came from Dan Stanford as Khashoggi, a character the audience loved to hate. He very convincingly played the villain who was determined to prevent rock music from being restored to the planet. He successfully brought plenty of menace (and humour!) to the stage.

It is a shame that there isn’t space to single out every actor in this production because the entire cast was fantastic. The energy levels were incredible, the endless comic lines were delivered perfectly, and the dancing was nothing short of superb. The whole company appeared to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, which made the performance even more convincing. By the finale, the audience was enthusiastically joining in with Queen’s iconic anthems, We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions. Even members of the backstage team appeared in the theatre boxes, highlighting the collaborative spirit behind the show.

Well done, HSAP. Yet another triumph for you!
