Funny Cos It’s True is a hugely enjoyable second album from Everyone Says Hi, building confidently on the promise of their debut while giving their sound greater depth, warmth and personality.
At its heart, this is hook-heavy, groove-forward indie pop with a wonderfully hazy, retro-futurist sheen. The songs are packed with infectious melodies and big, anthemic choruses, while the warm production gives the record a timeless quality. There are echoes of classic songwriting craft alongside more psychedelic, contemporary textures, making the album feel both familiar and fresh.
There’s also something particularly appealing about the way the record balances lightness with emotional substance. The humour and wit never feel superficial; underneath the catchy melodies are thoughtful songs about modern pressures, digital isolation, family, fatherhood and grief. That contrast gives the album a real emotional pull.
Nick Hodgson’s decision to record and self-produce the album from his home studio also seems to have paid off. There’s a sense of immediacy and authenticity throughout, with the performance-based approach allowing the songs to breathe rather than becoming overly polished.
Most importantly,
Funny Cos It’s True is simply a lot of fun to listen to. It’s melodic, warm, occasionally poignant and consistently full of character. Everyone Says Hi have taken the momentum of their first record and turned it into something bigger and more assured. A seriously rewarding indie-pop album with plenty of hooks and plenty of heart.
