Singles Of The Week: 6 March 2020

With Lady Gaga announcing an all-too-brief summer world tour and a debate as to whether Coronavirus may halt Eurovision, this week in music has been an interesting one. Thankfully we have reached Friday and so we are ready for our new single rundown...

SINGLE OF THE WEEK: Mathea - Wollt dir nur sagen Rating: 5/5

Mathea is fast becoming one of the finest Austrian music artists of all time. With the phenomenal 2x, Alles Gute and Chaos having already proved her pop punch, 2020 was kickstarted with the more personal touch of Kein Tutu. Having just announced her album M - pre-order the boxset or regret it! - her latest single Wollt dir nur sagen brings back the power pop hit with extra power. This will be on repeat for years. And we won't be complaining.

Molly Payton - 1972 Rating: 5/5

New Zealander Molly Payton relocated to London 2 years ago and has steadily been building her presence on the music scene. Her new single 1972 is a devastatingly honest, boldly vocalled timeless cut of nostalgic emotion.

Elderbrook - Numb Rating: 4/5

Londoner Elderbrook is currently best known as the vocalist on Camelphat's Cola, but his latest single is destined to change that. Numb is a hypnotisingly mellow dance track that is destined to dominate playlists around the world.

Katy Perry - Never Worn White Rating: 3/5

Katy Perry is best known for her bold, brassy pop songs. However, she has to date released the occasional compelling ballad - perhaps most notably the lush Unconditionally. She returns to balladry to pay tribute to her fiancé (Orlando Bloom) and uses the video to announce her pregnancy. While the song is not as strong as Unconditionally, her vocals are in fine form and the lyrics are touching.

Lesley Roy - Story Of My Life Rating: 4/5

A decade ago Lesley Roy enjoyed minor chart success with her emotionally charged rock pop. Since then she has written for US icons Adam Lambert and Jana Kramer. Yesterday she was revealed as the artist Ireland has been hyping as their Eurovision 2020 entry. Story Of My Life might be late noughties leaning power pop, but it certainly packs a punch.

Demi Lovato - I Love Me Rating: 3/5

Demi Lovato has had a rather tough ride. The Barney & Friends alum may still be in her 20s, but she has lived a life full of extreme highs and lows. While working through her personal and professional issues, Lovato has become a voice for confidence and belief. Her latest single is the anthemic I Love Me. While lyrically on point, the song itself lacks punch in its formulaic approach.
