Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 26 May 2023

Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week

From Friday 26th May

The Little Mermaid (PG)
This visually astonishing retelling of Disney's classic story (inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's fairytale), tells the magical deep sea story of mermaid Ariel (Halle Bailey), who dreams of walking on the land that lies above, and - after a family fallout - hastily makes a deal with sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) who grants her wish…with a catch! Critics have praised The Little Mermaid as the best live-action Disney update since Beauty and the Beast, and have proclaimed that a star is born in Halle Bailey, while also praising McCarthy's tentacled villain of the piece. Co-starring, Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni and Javier Bardem.

Sisu (15)
Acclaimed action film from director/writer Jalmari Helander, which sees a lonely prospector in Lapland, Finland in WWII, unearth some gold, but when he runs into a nasty group of Nazi soldiers who intend to take it from him just because they can, but they soon find they messed with the wrong guy! A gloriously gory thrill ride, Sisu is filled with thrilling action and boasts a terrific lead performance by Jorma Tommila, who has spawned a new action hero to cherish. You do not want to miss this gem.

Hypnotic (15)
Director Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City) returns with a film of reality bending proportions. Ben Affleck is Daniel Rourke, a detective who delves down the rabbit hole as he investigates the case of his missing daughter, and secret government programme, in this unfurling thriller.

From Wednesday 31st May

The Machine (15)
Bert Kreischer is “The Machine” in this riotous action comedy inspired by the comedian’s own virally successful hit 2016 stand-up routine. Starring Kreischer as a fictionalised version of himself, The Machine sees Bert and his father (played gloriously by Star Wars legend Mark Hamill) kidnapped by those Bert wronged 20 years ago on his drunken college semester in Russia. And when all else fails, Bert may need to tap back into those partying, drink-fuelled, daredevil antics to save the day!
