Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 2 June 2023

Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week

From Friday 2nd June

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (PG)
The long-awaited sequel to the endlessly imaginative Oscar-winning 2018 animated superhero film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse sees young Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) re-united with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), and cast into the Spider-verse, where he encounters more spider-people than he could ever imagine. But as they clash on how to handle the threat of villain The Spot (Jason Schwartzmen), Miles finds himself in a new fight that redefines what it means to be a hero. Breathtakingly animated and superbly voiced by its brilliant and talented cast, early word is saying that this sequel is every bit as creative, heartfelt and innovative as the original film, and one mighty big gift to fans of Spider-Man lore (no matter what universe you prefer!)

The Boogeyman (15)
From the ingenious horror mind of director Rob Savage (Host, Dashcam) and A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, The Boogeyman adapts the short Stephen King story for the big screen and the result is a chilling horror film that could give you sleepless nights. Telling the story of high school student Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) and her younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), dealing with the pain of losing their mother and not receiving enough support from their therapist father Will (Chris Messina), until a desperate patient comes calling at their home, bringing with them an entity that feeds on the family’s pain.

From Thursday 8th June

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (12a)
Steven Caple Jr.’s (Creed II) new entry in the blockbusting Transformers franchise acts as a reboot of the series, while simultaneously being a sequel to 2018’s Bumblebee and prequel to Michael Bay’s 2007 film. Rise of the Beasts is set in Brooklyn, 1994, and sees ex-military electronics expert Noah (Anthony Ramos) and artefact researcher Elena (Dominique Fishback) caught up in the three-way conflict of the Maximals, Predacons and Terracons, as they help Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) and the Autobots in protecting the Earth from the threat of Unicron’s (Colman Domingo) arrival. Action-packed and filled with many exciting characters from the expansive lore of Hasbro’s enduring creation, fans have a lot to be excited about here!
