In 2016, a 16 year old Ellie Delvaux auditioned for The Voice Belgique. While many artists eliminated in Week 2 of the live shows would now be just reality TV history, she went on to represent Belgium under the name Blanche at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2017 with the still epic City Lights. The song became a huge viral hit, but Blanche was not in a hurry for immediate success. Instead, she has focused on building her sound and crafting a unique space in the overpopulated music industry. The decision was a wise one, for now aged just 20, she is seen as one of the most distinctive up and coming artists out there - a reputation normally not reserved for contestants of either show.
With her debut album, Empire, set for release tomorrow, we caught up with her to ask what songs make her...
This song just brings my mind somewhere else, it boosts my brain so much, I love to listen to it while driving, everything moves so fast but I feel like I can catch a sight of everything and take it in, it’s hard to explain you got to try it.
Cry
No Witnesses - Keaton Henson
Again, it’s more the whole album, also the album Birthday. These are just so sad, and again I used to listen to it a lot when I was losing one of the most important people in my life, no death, other reasons, that I was not dependent of, so it’s really painful to be there and watch the person leaving you there with not much of an explanation or apologies. So yes, it brings back all of this.
Laugh
Honestly for me music is not really about laughing, not to sound grumpy, but yes, it can make me smile, and feel good, enjoy the moment, but laugh? Maybe some humanistic song, but then it would be French ones so...
Want to work out
Well I never really 'want' to work out, but when I do I like to listen to some pop soul music, like Aretha Franklin - R.E.S.P.E.C.T, for example. I like the contrast with this music and work out, it keeps my mind relax but still quite boosting and go through the work out.
Reminisce
BaNobody - SOAK
I used to listen to this song a lot at the end of my teenage years, when I didn’t feel so good about myself.
Relax
Rule My World - Kings of Convenience
Actually the whole album Declaration of Dependence (and the others). I just love this album, I used to listen to it a lot while I was travelling through Jordan last year, we spent a lot of time in the bus. So it also brings back these memories.
Feel Determined
Fever - Balthazar
Again, the whole album is so amazing. It just wants to make you achieve everything you always wanted to do.
Dance
Make You - Famous Yesterday
When I put this song at parties nobody ever really likes it, but it makes me feel good!
