This new compilation of the popular Dreamboats and Petticoats
series celebrates the birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll with a collection of 100 hits spread over 4 CD’s.
Seventy years ago the band that invented the genre – Bill Haley and his Comets – were formed. Within two years the group had become international superstars. Their 1954 hit, Rock Around The Clock
, included here was a song that gave them their first hit. Pre Elvis and Buddy Holly the song was one that changed the course of pop music.
If Bill Haley was America’s first Rock ‘n’ Roll star then Lonnie Donegan was Britain’s. His 1955 hit was a fast tempo version of an American folk song, Rock Island Line. The song kick started the skiffle craze that became popular in the mid-fifties.
Tommy Steele’s Singing The Blues
was another pioneering track whilst The Everley Brothers All I have To Do Is Dream
is a song that still transcends generations and was a global hit in 1958.
Bob Dylan is represented on this superlative collection with Lay Lady Lay – a timeless mix of country, soul and blues. Listening to The Walker Brothers’ Make It Easy On Youself
makes you realise that they do not write soulful songs like this anymore.
Other artists included here are Percy Sledge with the evergreen When A Man Loves a Woman, Otis Redding with (Sitting on) The Dock of the Bay along with other artists like Adam Faith, Roy Orbison, Matt Munro, Elvis, Neil Sedaka… as you will see from the CD tracks above, the list goes on.
The collection ends with Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World
which celebrates its 55th anniversary this year. In 1967 the song was a worldwide hit except in America, Armstrong’s home country. The boss of his record label did not like the tune and refused to promote it!
A worthy compilation for your collection.
